RIP Flyer 3/13/99-11/13/09 Sunday November 8 started fine. 3 happy silly Flat-Coats were playing. Then 10 year old Flyer fell over with a Grand Mal seizure. It stopped; she seemed okay. The vet said to bring her in the next day. That night, she had 2 more seizures; after the last one she was blind, disoriented, and weak.
They took blood; analyzed some there and sent the rest off for more specialized testing. We started her on phenobarb and prednisone to stop the seizures and prayed the lab would find an infection we could treat. Otherwise it would be a brain tumor, not uncommon in an older Flattie.
Over the week, she got weaker. Friday morning she woke us at 4AM with a seizure. She had another at 6:30 and yet another was starting at 7:15 when we arrived at the vet's office. That afternoon, the lab results came in. No infection. No hope for recovery. We gave her that last shot that sent her to the Rainbow Bridge.
She was the best dog I've ever had in 50+ years of living with multiple dogs. She was always willing to go anywhere, to try anything. She was my primary motivation to come back from my stroke in 2005. She needed her human to be able to take her places and do things with her.
Flyer has been gone almost a week now and our household just seems...wrong. Penny and Giddy are very subdued; Earl and I cry a lot. We miss her more than words can express.

Wanna see something pretty? Presenting 10 year old CH U-CD Crossraguel Exuberant Flyer CD RN ONYX: The lack of advanced obedience and rally titles is entirely my fault. We're working on it. This was taken last month at the Reliant Series of Dog Shows. Current Mood: pleased | | Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 | | 8:05 pm |
We did it! Flyer and I got that all-important third qualifying score in Rally Novice today. She is now officially known as CH Crossraguel Exuberant Flyer CD RN ONYX! Our first 2 tries were last weekend; we got third place one day and fourth place the next. Today we didn't get a placement, but we did qualify for the third time, so she has her new title! Not bad for a 10 year old dog and her gimpy, wobbly human... Current Mood: jubilant | | Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 | | 9:48 pm |
Hurricanes suck I'm too tired/lazy to repost what I put on LJ, but if you go to http://zubiemom.livejournal.com/ you'll find a rundown of our last 5 days. It wasn't fun, but we made it through safely. Current Mood: tired | | Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 | | 10:54 pm |
I'm back - did you miss me? Our household has changed a little bit. Merry, the pitt bull foster, went to her forever home in early July. At the big Reliant Dog Show cluster about a week later, I ran into Flyer's breeder. She had an 11 month old Flattie that was turning out too small to do well in conformation, and she thought I might want her for obedience, rally, and flyball. On July 28, I brought Penny home. Sunny still resents her somewhat, but they mostly get along. They play a lot. She also plays with Giddy and Flyer. She's a smart, devious little thing - she manages to get to things that Flyer and Giddy have never managed to get, even though she's smaller then they are. We graduated from Basic 1 tonight. Basic 2 begins Monday. She actually showed a vague semblance of a clue tonight about heeling; that's a first! Sit, down, stand, come and stay are starting to gel for her too. Flyer is still in Rally class; I'm determined to get her back in the ring to earn another title, and she's still running flyball. Hurricane Ike is threatening our normal existence. The latest path shows it hitting Freeport Friday night as a Cat 3 or 4. That means we'd get Cat 1 or 2 winds here, and 5-10 inches of rain. I doubt we'll flood, but there could be damage to the house from the wind. A friend who lives close to the bay is coming to stay with us, bringing her 4 cats. That means 5 cats, 4 retrievers and 3 humans in an 800 sq ft house, probably without electricity or air conditioning. Oh goody. Can't hurricane season be done?! Free to Bad Home... one absent-minded husband!
He brought in a van full of groceries while I was in the kitchen putting them away. Flyer was stuck to me like glue, in case I dropped something edible. Sunny and Giddy were (I thought) in the living room. I finished withe groceries, started to walk to the computer - and saw the front door open wide, with no dogs in sight. I panicked. Giddy's recall is good, but if she was out of hearing range already she might end up lost. Sunny usually has to be told anything several times, since it still is hard for her to realize that human sounds might have meaning for her.
I started calling them frantically. Within a few minutes they each came bolting to me, from opposite directions. They got bigtime praise and cookies from me. I'm especially proud of Sunny; this is the first time she's ever responded from a distance!
As for Earl...he's lucky I don't have a gun. He (unintentionally, I know) endangered my babies! | | 9:02 am |

After 3 years we're back in class! (also posted to LJ) Flyer has complained muchly the last 3 years. She had a busy schedule before my stroke, with several classes each week and obedience, breed, or flyball competition on weekends. She loved it. Flyball continued even when I couldn't stand for more than a few seconds - other people ran her while I watched. After seven months I was able to handle her, since in flyball it's the dog that does all the running. Obedience of any sort has been out because I couldn't manage pace changes and I couldn't stay on my feet long enough . (My legs would start to shake and then just give out.) AKC introduced Rally as a titling sport while I was out of commission. It's based on regular obedience exercises but is quite different in many ways. Tonight, Flyer and I went to our first ever beginning Rally class. I managed to stay on my feet for most of the hour, and after about 10 minutes, Flyer remembered the meaning of Heel and started to look like an obedience dog. She's still rusty at maintaining precise heel position, but she is starting to remember, despite my gait being very odd, and my left hand being useless for guiding her (or more importantly from her perspective, rewarding her with treats when she gets it right). I'm starting to think we might actually be able to do this! The old girl may get another title after her name. She's certainly willing to try; she's always ready to go anywhere and do anything. Can you tell I love this dog? She has her paw wrapped around my heart. Current Mood: happy | | Sunday, January 13th, 2008 | | 6:43 pm |
Just 6 days after we celebrated her 12th birthday, Zubie went to the Bridge January 10. Monday night she stopped eating, and Thursday our vet gave her that final shot. Zubie was not my first dog, but she was my first Flat-Coat, first obedience dog, and first flyball dog. She changed our lives when she arrived - we'd never met such a demanding, bossy, active, fun little person ever. She had strong opinions about everything and expressed them quite well. Obedience was boring (she grudgingly endured it long enough to get her Novice titles), agility was fun only as long as she could design the course herself, and flyball was bliss. Anything involving water was also bliss; we had to train her to NOT jump in the shower with us unless she was invited. She was the Queen, owner of all toys in the universe (even toys at other dogs' homes) and ruled our household with an iron paw. Flyer, Giddy, and Sunny are a little lost without Zubie to boss them around. We are too. Sunny update Because I am exceedingly lazy, I'm not going to copy it over here, but I posted on LJ. Sunny is learning to use her 2 rusty little brain cells, and it's exhausting! | | Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 | | 11:06 pm |
Baaaa! I am once again being a good little sheepie and following what seems like most of fandom to set up a place over here. I don't post much on LJ and even less on GJ, so don't expect too much chatter here either. Chronic lurker here. Current Mood: tired |
